Meta began as Facebook, launched on 4 February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg together with co-founders Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Eduardo Saverin.6, 7
The company, now headquartered in Menlo Park, California, renamed itself Meta in October 2021, and Mark Zuckerberg remains its chairman and chief executive officer.1, 2, 3, 7, 8
Its stated mission is to build the future of human connection and the technology that makes it possible.6
Meta publicly released its first Llama model, LLaMA, on 24 February 2023 for researchers.4
Llama 2 followed on 18 July 2023 as an open source model free for research and commercial use, Llama 3 on 18 April 2024, and the first Llama 4 models on 5 April 2025.6, 10, 12, 13
Alexandr Wang joined in June 2025 as Chief AI Officer to lead Meta Superintelligence Labs.14
That lab introduced Muse Spark on 8 April 2026 as the first model of the Muse family, and Meta introduced Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full on 12 October 2026.5, 15
On 15 October 2026 Meta released Muse Spark Open, an open-weight model with 816 billion parameters, under the Muse Model License.11
Meta therefore serves some models only through a hosted API while releasing others as open weights.2, 9, 10, 11
Its API terms are an agreement with Meta Platforms, Inc., or with Meta Platforms Ireland Limited for users in the European Region.2
