xAI

xAI was founded in 2023 by Elon Musk together with a founding team that included Igor Babuschkin, Christian Szegedy, Yuhuai (Tony) Wu and Jimmy Ba.^4, 8, 9

Its stated mission is to accelerate human scientific discovery.¹⁷

The company announced its first model, Grok, on 3 November 2023, describing an AI with real-time knowledge of the world through the X platform and powered by the large language model Grok-1.¹

On 17 March 2024 it released the weights and architecture of the 314-billion-parameter Grok-1 under the Apache 2.0 license, and it later published the weights of Grok 2 under a community license.^{11, 12, 13}

Grok 3 was previewed on 19 February 2025, and Grok 4 followed on 9 July 2025 for subscribers and through the API.^18, 19

SpaceX announced on 2 February 2026 that it had acquired xAI, and Elon Musk is the chief executive officer of SpaceX.^{2, 3, 4, 10}

The business was rebranded SpaceXAI in July 2026, and its website and terms now use the name SpaceXSI.^5, 6, 7

Its legal entity, SpaceXAI LLC, is a Nevada company with its principal place of business in Austin, Texas.⁷

On 21 September 2026 it released Grok 4.7, which its API documentation recommends for code and chat.^13, 20

The API is offered from the United States, with a regional endpoint that guarantees US processing and a global endpoint that may route requests between regions.^{7, 14, 15, 16}
