Tencent was founded in Shenzhen in 1998, and its headquarters are still there.^1, 2, 3

Its five Core Founders include Ma Huateng, who had led development of an internet paging system at China Motion Telecom Development and is chairman and chief executive officer as of August 2026.^{5, 6, 7, 8}

The company presents "Value for Users, Tech for Good" as its vision and mission.¹⁸

Tencent unveiled its first large language model, Hunyuan, at its Global Digital Ecosystem Summit in September 2023 and opened it to enterprises in China.^{9, 10, 11}

In its results for 2023 it said Hunyuan had been scaled to trillion-parameter scale with a Mixture of Experts architecture.¹¹

Hunyuan Turbo, a Mixture of Experts model service, followed in September 2024, and the Hunyuan-Large report of November 2024 described an open-source model with 52 billion activated parameters.^19, 20

Hy3 preview launched on 23 April 2026 as the first model of the Hy3 generation and was released as open source.^12, 21

The full Hy3 arrived on 6 July 2026, with 295 billion total parameters, 21 billion active parameters and an API on Tencent Cloud TokenHub.^4, 8, 12

The family is now called Tencent Hy, formerly Tencent Hunyuan, and Hy3 is released under the Apache 2.0 licence.^{4, 12, 13, 14}

For the API, the international service lets customers choose a resource region, while the mainland China service stores information collected in China there.^{15, 16, 17}
