Mistral AI was founded in April 2023 and is incorporated in Paris, France, where its registered office is located.1, 2, 4
Its co-founders are Arthur Mensch, who previously worked at Google DeepMind, and Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix, who previously worked at Meta.1, 5, 6
According to the company, the founders were determined to democratize AI by making it accessible and customizable and by returning control to users.1
Its first language model, Mistral 7B, was released on 27 September 2023 under the Apache 2.0 license, which the company says allows use without restrictions.1, 7, 8, 9
