Kimi (Moonshot)

Moonshot AI was founded in spring 2023 in Beijing by Yang Zhilin together with Tsinghua alumni Zhang Yutao, Zhou Xinyu and Wu Yuxin.^{1, 2, 5, 6, 7}

As of October 2026, Yang Zhilin serves as chief executive.^{5, 6, 7, 8}

The company states its view as seeking the optimal conversion from energy to intelligence.¹

Its GitHub organization describes the company as committed to solving ambitious "moonshot" problems that lead toward AGI, and says it embraces open source.¹²

In October 2023 it launched its first large model, which accepted 200,000 Chinese characters of input, together with the Kimi Chat assistant.^3, 4

In January 2025 it published the Kimi K1.5 technical report on reinforcement learning with language models.^12, 13

Kimi K2, a mixture-of-experts model with 1 trillion total parameters, was open-sourced in July 2025.^13, 14

Kimi K2 Thinking followed in November 2025 and Kimi K2.5 in January 2026.^{13, 15, 16}

Kimi K2.6 was open-sourced in April 2026, and Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter model with a 1-million-token context window, was introduced in July 2026.^{13, 17, 18}

Recent weights are published on Hugging Face, under a Modified MIT License for K2.6 and a dedicated Kimi K3 License for K3.^9, 10

The company's address is in Haidian District, Beijing, while the international Kimi Open Platform is run by a Singapore entity that stores data on servers in Singapore.^1, 2, 11
