DeepSeek was founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, who had previously co-founded the quantitative hedge fund High-Flyer.2, 5, 6
It began as an AI research lab started by High-Flyer, separate from the fund's financial business, and was then spun off as an independent company.8, 13

Its first models, DeepSeek Coder and DeepSeek LLM, were released in November 2023.8, 9
DeepSeek-V2, a Mixture-of-Experts language model, was published in May 2024.14
DeepSeek-V3, a Mixture-of-Experts model with 671 billion total parameters, was announced on 26 December 2024 and described in a technical report.15, 16
DeepSeek-R1 was released on 20 January 2025 with its code and models under the MIT License.3, 4
DeepSeek-V4 Preview, described as open-sourced, appeared on 24 April 2026, and DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash, which the company calls the smallest model in a new architecture family, followed on 10 September 2026.12, 17, 18
