Cohere was founded in 2019 in Toronto, Canada.4
Its co-founders are Aidan Gomez, Nick Frosst and Ivan Zhang, and Gomez previously interned at Google Brain, where he contributed to the paper "Attention Is All You Need".4, 5, 6
In November 2021 the company made its natural language processing platform generally available.9
In 2022 it launched Cohere Labs, an open science initiative for solving complex machine learning problems.4

In September 2026 it announced a definitive business combination agreement with Aleph Alpha, subject to regulatory approvals.7
The announcement says the combined company plans to be headquartered in both Berlin and Toronto once the transaction closes.7
